What We Do With a Floor Under Water
Four things, and we stop there. Lift the standing water. Open the pockets it ran into so the trapped water can be reached. Dry the structure back to a measured target. Write all of it down while it happens.
Nothing on that list is putting your house back together afterward, and nothing on it is the plumbing repair.
How much extraction happens before any machine is switched on is not a judgment call made on the day. Water damage work in this country runs to the ANSI/IICRC S500 standard. Separately from how contaminated the water is, that standard assigns a loss a class describing how much of the space is actually wet and how hard the water will be to evaporate back out.
A room where wet porous material covers less than roughly 5 percent of the surface is a different job from one past roughly 40 percent, even when the same pipe caused both. Extent is what the class describes. Contamination is a separate question with a separate answer, which is why a clean rupture across a whole floor and a small contaminated backup get handled almost opposite to each other.
The practical version: the more of your room the water reached, the more of the job is extraction and the less of it is machines. The Failures That Put Water Across Your Floor

How We Get the Water Up
On carpet the head is weighted and the passes overlap, worked slowly enough that the vacuum has time to pull through the pile rather than skate across the top of it. The same square of floor gets crossed several times, and the operator listens as much as he watches, because the sound changes when a pass stops lifting. Underneath, the pad has usually finished its life, so it comes out in cut strips, rolled tight and bagged at your doorway instead of dragged wet down a hallway.
Hard flooring gets squeegeed toward the head and pulled dry section by section. Where the covering is floating or glued down, the water underneath cannot be reached from the top at all, so a section comes up to open that pocket and let the wand reach it directly. The kick space under a base cabinet is a sealed box built out of particleboard, and it holds water for days after the tile in front of it reads dry, so we open it during extraction rather than find it later. Tack strip around the perimeter comes up with the carpet, not after it.
This stretch is unglamorous and physical and it is the highest-value hour of the whole job. Every gallon we lift now is a gallon the dehumidifiers are not asked to pull back out of your air over the following days, one grain at a time. That hour is what you are buying when you call early.
Where Extraction Stops and Drying Starts
These are two jobs with two different tests, and running them together is how buildings get dried badly. Extraction is finished when a pass over the same square stops producing anything in the tank. That is a test of the machine, not of your building.
Drying has a completely different one, and we set the target for it before a single fan runs. S500 puts establishing the dry standard and the drying goals among the things that happen during the initial response, alongside working out the water source and how far it traveled. In practice that means somebody walks to a room the water stayed out of, takes readings off the same materials there, and writes those numbers down as the finish line. The high-water mark goes on your wall in pencil at the same time.
Set the target after the equipment has already been running for two days and nobody has an honest way to say when the job ends. Set it first and the answer is arithmetic.
Where the Machines Go and Why
Air movers do not dry anything. What they do is push the layer of saturated air that forms tight against a wet surface out of the way so evaporation can carry on. The machine that actually removes water from your house is the dehumidifier, pulling what the air movers just handed to the air back out and dumping it.
That distinction is what decides the placement. Fans go where wet surface is, angled low along a baseboard line or into an opened stud bay, never parked in the middle of a room to make noise. As commonly applied from the S500 equipment calculation, a setup starts from roughly one air mover per 50 to 70 square feet of wet floor, and roughly one per 100 to 150 square feet of wet wall or ceiling above the two foot mark, then moves from there once somebody has actually seen the room.

The dehumidifiers get sized against the same wet area, and their capacity is rated in pints of water removed per day at a set test condition. Two units with different numbers on the label are not always what the numbers suggest, because the federal test procedure changed in 2019 and machines rated under it report smaller figures than the same machine would have under the old one.
What Leaves Your House, and What Stays
Nothing is decided room by room. Carpet pad soaks, compresses and never recovers, so on almost any real volume of water it goes. Carpet itself is often savable on a clean supply line loss if it comes up fast and gets extracted properly.
Wallboard is the one with a deadline attached. Public health guidance is that board which has not dried sufficiently inside 48 hours should be cut out and discarded, and where the cut is needed it runs past the last wet inch rather than up to it, so the cavity behind it is open to moving air instead of sealed against it.
Hardwood, concrete and a layered subfloor sit in a slower category altogether. Water goes into low evaporation material and comes back out of it grudgingly, which is why a slab and a hardwood floor extend a drying plan rather than fitting inside the one a wet carpet would have needed. Flooring over a saturated pocket comes up so the pocket can be cleaned and dried, not because the flooring itself is the problem.
Everything that comes out is photographed where it lies before it moves. What goes back in afterward is somebody else's trade. We do not rebuild what we remove, and the framing behind an opened wall should read dry on a meter before anybody closes it, because sealing moisture into a cavity is how the second problem starts behind the first.

What Proves Your Building Actually Dried
The reference readings taken on day one are the argument. Every following visit takes the same points on the same materials, with pins in the material rather than a sensor held against it, and writes the numbers into a log along with the temperature and the humidity in the room.
FEMA's guidance for flood damaged buildings treats wetted material as presumed dry at or under 15 percent on a penetrating meter. That is a useful floor rather than a universal answer, since the honest target is whatever untouched material of the same kind in your house reads.
